Full Description

A hut circle at Aird near Badachro.

177775 873984 Aird AMC130: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. The circular stone structure is situated on a level terrace with steep slopes to NW and SE. Its interior is dished and contains tumble. The enclosure to N is probably later than the hut circle and was probably built by robbing stone from the hut circle. Other slumped turf/stone dykes nearby may be contemporary, together with some large upright stones. There are panoramic views from the site over land and sea. Average inner diameter is 5.25m, outer diameter is 7.65m. The double skinned wall is 1.2m thick with maximum height 0.4m. The entrance is not discernable. <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

Note: NGR adjusted to likely position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 14/06/2017].
