Full Description

A hut circle near Achiltibuie.

203151 908534 Achiltibuie Post Office 5 CMM005: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C MacNeilage in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. CMM005 is one of a cluster of 12 circular stone structures on gently sloping ground near to Alt Bad a Chotair. Field systems both ancient and more recent are visible, and there is a burnt mound close to CMM002. The terrain consists of well grazed rough heather/grassland with marshy areas. All the structures have panoramic views both inland and to the sea and are around 2000m north of the broch at Achlochan. CMM005 is in very close proximity to CMM004 (10m distant) (see MHG57351) and CMM006, (15m distant) (see MHG57353). The far side of Loch Vatichan is in view from the HC, where there are linear clusters of HC's. The HC is 2m from a small watercourse and 250m from Alt Bad a Chotair. No wall stones are visible, just a level circular platform covered with moss, with a small water courses running near to the platform edges to NW and E, (see sketch). There are some large stones in the platform banking. A circular shape is indicated, and measurements are approximate due to lack of visible stones. The external diameter of the platform averages 7.6m. No walling was visible. CMM003 is 320m distant. <1> <2>
