Full Description

A Hut Circle at Badenscaille.

203716 906457 Badenscaille 5 CEM020: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, Catriona Martin and others in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This circular platform is in very poor and degraded condition. From the site there are panoramic views to the sea. There are traces of further circular house platforms on the sloping hillside to E of Badenscaille Burn, between PC001 (see MHG7162) and CEM020. The hillside vegetation is a mixture of grass and bracken. This may have been a settlement area where early HC stones were robbed as later HC platforms and walls were built. There are remains of several degraded stone walls running downslope towards the sea. There are lazy beds at the highest point of the hillside. The site is 500m from the Broch at Achlochan. Shieling remains are close to the site. An ancient wall runs N/S to the south east of the structure and a modern fence runs E/W at a distance of 10m to the north of the structure. The platfrom is visible as a clear circle, outer diameter 9m, sited 10 m to the east of CEM004 (see MHG57367). Outer facing stones are visible in the south western arc. The HC is 100m from the Badenscaille Burn and 500m from the sea. CEM020 is distant 10m from CEM004, 170m from CEM002 (see MHG57366), and 200m from PC001. <1> <2>
