Full Description

A hut circle at Torr Na H-Ulaidhe at Auchtercairn.

180598 877210 Torr Na H-Ulaildhe 2 (Auchtercairn R7) AH006: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes and A Harnden in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This HC is in fair condition and is one of 10 circular stone structures in the Auchtercairn area above and to the east of Gairloch. It is sited in a cluster of 3. AH006 is at a distance of 75m from AH005 (see MHG7523) and 125m from JF001. This HC is under a crag to NW, and a slope on SW extends down to sea loch. There are panoramic views inland and out to sea. The site is 150m from a stream and 500m from the sealoch. The platform is dug into and built out from a gentle south facing slope. The walls are engulfed in heather with only a few stones showing. Inside the structure is a mixture of heather, grass and moss. There is steep banking down from SSE wall. The surrounding landscape is covered with a mixture of heather, bracken and grass with some young trees. Measurements were difficult due to the engulfing heather obscuring the wall stones. The sketch gives a false impression; the structure was finally assessed as circular. Average internal diameter is 7.0m, external diameter is 9.5m. The double skinned wall is 1m thick, with maximum height 0.3m. The possible entrance faces southeast, with internal width 1.0m, external width 2.0m and passage length 3.0m, indicating extended terminals. AH006 is sited in a cluster of 3,and is at a distance of 75m from AH005 and 125m from JF001. <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

NGR adjusted in 2017 to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs. <3>
