Full Description

A hut circle at Torr Garve, near Applecross.

171407 843393 Torr Garve 4 HK012: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and H Keiro in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular HC is part of a cluster of 6. HK010 (see MHG57807) and HK009 (see MHG57806) are sited 500m S of the Applecross broch and campsite, and together with HK011 (see MHG57808), HK013 (see MHG57811) and BB500 (see MHG57814), are all on or around the same contour (70m to 76m) in a narrow plateau stretching S from HK010 and passing to E of Tor Mor. HK012 adjoins HK011 without overlaying it. HK011 and HK012 are surrounded by field walls which continue down the valley to S. Average inner diameter is 10.5m, outer diam is 13.7m. The double skinned wall is 1.2m thick and is clearest to SE where the wall thickens at the N side of the entrance, and length of entrance passage is 2.1m. The entrance length is deduced from the stones in place to N side of entrance, but width cannot be measured. Terminals may have been extended. Bracken submerges much of the visible double skinned sections. There is an arc of single boulders to NW of the HC. There is a built up curving bank covered in bracken 70m from HK011 and HK012, at NG 71441 43365. This may be associated with HK011 and HK012. HK012 adjoins HK011 and is at a distance of 300m from HK009 and 150m from BB500. <1> <2>
