Full Description

A hut circle at Torr Garve, near Applecross.

171446 843480 Torr Garve 7 BB500: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and H Keino in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular HC is part of a cluster of 6. HK010 (see MHG57807) and HK009 (see MHG57806) are sited 500m S of the Applecross broch and campsite, and together with HK012 (see MHG57809), HK011 (see MHG57808), HK013 (see MHG57811) and BB500, are all on or around the same contour (70m to 76m) in a narrow plateau stretching S from HK010 and passing to E of Tor Mor. BB500 is bracken infested and there is much tumble inside. It is revetted into a steep slope to S. Nearby is another possible HC, very ruined, internal diam approx 5m, at NG71513 43498. Conifers have been planted to N. The HC wall consists of large boulders. Average internal diameter is 6m, external diam is 8.5m (approx due to tumble). The double skinned wall is 1.7m thick with max height of 1m taken where revetted into bank. Entrance is probably facing SW, entrance width is 1.4m both internally and externally, and passage length is 1.4m, indicating standard terminals. BB500 is at a distance of 150m from HK013, 150m from HK012, and 400m from HK010. <1> <2>
