Full Description
A hut circle at Torr Mor. Recorded by the OS in 1974 as Hut Circle 'D'.
In the area centred on NG 709 430 there is a settlement of 4 hut circles ('A'-'D').
'A' is 8.0m in diameter between centres of a wall spread to 3.0m. Entrance, in the WNW, is flanked on its W side by 2 blocks on edge.
'B' is 5.0m is diameter between centres of a wall 1.2m thick with inner face preserved in the N arc. The SW arc is mutilated and no entrance is evident.
'C' is 5.7m in diameter within a wall 1.4m thick. Entrance, in the SW, is choked with debris.
'D' is 6.0m in diameter within a rubble wall spread to 1.5m in which the inner face is visible. Ill-defined entrance in the W. Field clearance stones have been thrown into the interior of the hut.
In the vicinity of the huts are several stone clearance heaps and traces of walls from contemporary cultivation, but the area has been subject to later grazing and numerous later walls also occur.
Surveyed at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (J M) 4 June 1974.

Torr Mor Hut Circles and remains of cultivation. SMR no. NG74SW0007 The northernmost hut circle is about 25m. west of the existing storage reservoir. (Photo no. 3) SW of this, a substantial turf and stone dyke meanders WSW then SW from the SE corner of the reservoir fence (Photo no. 2) At least three fairly large moss-covered clearance cairns are spaced south of this dyke. A second turf dyke is 12m. east of the reservoir fence. It runs SSW, then forks, the eastern branch turning east after a few metres, the western branch continues SSW. Approximately 10m. further south, a further dyke joins this, running E-W. Attached to this dyke is a circle of stones typical of pre-clearance storage structures. The other two hut circles are south of this dyke (Photos 4 and 5) The smaller and more southerly is at the base of a telegraph pole.
The storage reservoir and the pipelines running NNW and SW from it, as well as the access route from the SW succeed in avoiding the three hut circles, but do cut through the dykes, and the NE end of the northernmost dyke is lost under the storage reservoir complex. Undoubtedly some of the cultivation features would have been contemporary with the hut circles, but probably re-utilised at a later date. Apart from the turf dyke immediately to the south of the first hut circle, the dykes would appear to be pre-Clearance rather than prehistoric. <2>
