Full Description

A hut circle at Allt Loch Meall nan Feadan, Toscaig.

107180 803680 Allt Loch Meall nam Feadan ANNW001: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and A Wakeling in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. Immediately surrounding the structure is a grassy flat field with some bracken, enclosed with stone walling. Outside this improved area is an area with lazy beds, then rocky moorland with mostly heather and grass. This circular stone structure has been badly damaged by a later fieldwall and an internal shieling with massive stone walls. The field wall has been much repaired. Only the footings of the northern arc of the HC survive, indicating a platform around 8.2m in diameter. No other measurements were possible. The site is in an area of improved pasture, and is fairly level with grass and bracken cover. ANNW001 is 25 m from a stream and 600m from the sea. Beyond the field wall which truncates the HC is a mixture of heather and grass. Six large clearance cairns lie within the field area. This area has been previously noted as a shieling site with 19 oval and circular shielings in this field. To the west of the field there are traces of lazybeds. Two bothies have been built onto the south wall of the field, both with dimensions approx 2.5x 1.5 internally. Views from the site are limited. ANNW001 is at a distance of 200m from ANNW002 (see MHG57920). <1> <2>
