Full Description
A milestone at Ardcronie.
In 2014 ARCH provided a number of courses, field trips and other activities exploring and researching the remains of the 19th century engineer, road and church builder Thomas Telford. A project was undertaken in Kyle of Sutherland, during which many sites were visited and photographed by participants. The milestones on the south side of the Dornoch Firth survive in stone with the distances chiselled on three faces. They are the distinctive shape found in the Highlands, with a V-shape profile in front, curved in a semicircle on the back, and bevelled on the top to create an extra face. Milestones were erected when Telford built the road network in the area in the early 1800s, but these are likely to be later, probably erected by the county (Ross and Cromarty). Locations are recorded on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, as well as the modern Explorer series; however, many on the modern maps no longer survive. This example is not at full height, but the inscriptions are visible. The west face has chiselled TAIN 12, the east face BONAR 3, and the top DINGWLL 37. The stone lies just outside the metal barrier, in an area currently blocked off from traffic due to subsidence. The stone has suffered some damage on the top. <1>
