Full Description

A milestone at Ardvannie.

In 2014 ARCH provided a number of courses, field trips and other activities exploring and researching the remains of the 19th century engineer, road and church builder Thomas Telford. A project was undertaken in Kyle of Sutherland, during which many sites were visited and photographed by participants. The milestones on the south side of the Dornoch Firth survive in stone with the distances chiselled on three faces. They are the distinctive shape found in the Highlands, with a V-shape profile in front, curved in a semicircle on the back, and bevelled on the top to create an extra face. Milestones were erected when Telford built the road network in the area in the early 1800s, but these are likely to be later, probably erected by the county (Ross and Cromarty). Locations are recorded on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, as well as the modern Explorer series; however, many on the modern maps no longer survive. This example has the following inscriptions: the west face has chiselled TAIN 8, the east face BONAR 7, and the top DINGWLL but the distance is illegible. On the west face, below the inscription is an inset rectangle, suggesting there was originally another small plaque inset here. It is notable that the shape and placement of the inset is different from the other extant milestone with similar height (at Easter Fearn). This stone is somewhat weathered, and obscured with lichen. <1>
