Full Description

Scotland's Rural Past (SRP)
Oral history recording and place name research relating to Camuscross conducted by members of the local community. The purpose of this research was to record names which have not previously been recorded on maps, but have survived through local knowledge and oral tradition.
'Cachaleith an Lònaid' means 'gateway of the lane.' This name refers to a gateway in the head wall forming the boundary between the crofts (in-bye land) of Camuscross and the hill grazings. This was the main access to the hill, with cows being brought up a track through No 21 Camuscross during the lifetime of older residents. This track was later incorporated into the existing road leading to the High Road of Camuscross.
