Full Description
Three grass-grown building platforms and a ruined cottage are situated beneath some trees on a knoll to the NW of Loch Insh. They are approached by a track from the NNE.
The most westerly platform (NH 83117 05326) measures 7m from NE to SW by 5m transversely and is cut back into the rising ground to a depth of 0.6m on both the NE and NW. There is no trace of any stonework. The second platform (NH 83141 05311), which is also terraced into the slope on the NE and NW, is situated 12m to the SE. It measures 12m from NW to SE by 8m transversely, but a stony layer beneath the turf suggests the building it once supported may have been no more than 4m wide. The third platform (NH 83133 05298), which is cut into the slope to its SW measures 8.4m from NW to SE by 6m transversely. Traces of brick and stone are visible in the turf, while its NE scarp has been revetted with timber-braced stonework. The track leads leads S to pass by the back of the cottage (NH 83146 05274) which is situated about 20m SE of the third platform. This building is situated on the leading edge of a natural ESE facing terrace overlooking an inlet of Loch Insh and the island of Tom Dubh. It measures 10.6m from NNE to SSW by 4.2m transversely over thinly cement rendered coursed rubble walls 0.5m thick, rising as high as 2.2m to wallhead in places. There is a fireplace for a ground floor compartment in the ivy clad NE gable with a recess for a mural cupboard to its ESE, while a smaller fireplace above once served a first floor compartment. The SSW gable has fallen and only traces of a central doorway survive in the ESE wall, which like its counterpart on the WNW, has been largely reduced to its foundations.
The cottage is shown roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map when it was attached to a roughly lenticular-shaped enclosure situated to its W (Inverness-shire 1873, sheet lxxxviii). In addition, there are two other roofed buildings shown to the N – one of which is conforms to the location of the second platform. The second edition shows only the roofed cottage attached to a narrow, rectangular enclosure on the W and a second roofed building which appears to represent the NW half of the building that stood on the second platform (Inverness-shire 1903, lxxxviii).
