Full Description
Four roughly rectangular building platforms are situated on a S facing slope about 110m SSW of a bridge spanning the railway cutting (NH 82933 05117). The most easily distinguished measures 23m from NW to SE by 6.5m transversely and is cut back into the rising bracken and grass-grown slope on the NE to a depth of 1.2m (NH 82964 05015). The SW side of the platform, which is solidly revetted with water-worn boulders, rises to a height of 0.7m above the natural surface of the ground. A second, possibly longer platform is situated about 15m SW, but this was so heavily overgrown with bracken that no useful measurements could be taken on the date of visit (NH 82936 05008). A third platform, situated about 60m to its W, measures 12.5m long by 4.8m transversely and is cut back into the rising grass-grown slope on the NE to a depth of 0.4m (NH 82871 05006); while the fourth platform, which is situated 40m to its ENE, measures 12m from ESE to WNW by 4m transversely and is also cut back into the rising grass-grown slope on the NE to a depth of 0.4m (NH 82907 05013). There is no trace of stonework on any of the platforms and it is possible that they once supported timber-built structures. This would be in keeping with a local tradition which holds that a military site was located on this side of Loch Insh during WWII. Visited by RCAHMS (ATW, SD), 9 April 2013 <1>
