Full Description
SL/99/168: 4 Gillen - some buildings removed in advance of building work . DML
NG25NE 24 267 598.
Within the area of the Gillen crofts are at least fourteen unroofed buildings, three enclosures and what may be three hayrick-stances. The buildings are largely along the line of the present road to the S, and a now intermittent continuation of its line to the E of the current road is depicted on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey map of 1880 (Island of Skye &c., Inverness-shire, 1880). Comparison of the 1st and 2nd editions of the Ordnance Survey maps of 1880 and 1904 (ibid) shows some contraction in the improved land and also some dereliction of buildings shown roofed on the 1st edition. Within the Gillen crofts are three hay rick-stances. These are oval or sub-square enclosures built of rubble and standing up to 1m in height and with no signs of ever having had an entrance. They are the same as those in the Geary crofts. (NG26SE 2)
