Full Description

A hut circle at Coille Gaireallach, Skye.

The site of this hut circle was recorded by M Wildgoose in 2010. during a landscape survey as part of the overall High Pasture Cave Environs Project. It was subject to test-pitting by M Wildgoose but there was no evidence of occupation. <1> (Detailed test pitting report forthcoming).

160669 819915 Coille Gaireallach1 HPC01: The hut circle was re-visited by M Wildgoose in 2011 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This is one of a number of prehistoric roundhouses in the area in and around Strath Suardal. This Strath runs NE/SW from Broadford to Torrin. These roundhouses are of special interest as all are within relatively easy reach of the site of High Pasture Cave (at NGR 159528 819759 - see MHG32043) and hence are likely to have been associated with it. HPC01 is a circular stone structure in fair condition. It sits on a gentle northwest facing slope in mature woodland, 11.0m from a stream. The surrounding vegetation is mainly grass and woodland with some bracken. The inside of the HC is covered with grass and moss. The HC is adjacent to an enclosure. Outer wall facings, slab orthostats, are visible all round apart from around the western arc. Inner wall facings show only in the northeast segment. Average inner diameter is 12.0m, outer diameter is 13.75m. The double skinned wall is 2.0m thick with maximum height 0.3m. The wall facings are slab orthostats with soil fill. No entrance was visible. HPC01 is at a distance of 200m from HPC14 (see MHG), 250m from HPC11 (see MHG) and 300m from HPC10 (see MHG). It is at a distance of 700m from High Pasture Cave. <2> <3>
