Full Description

A hut circle near Helgry. Recorded by the OS as hut circle 'B'. For 'A' see MHG9515.

('A' : NC 85832089) Enclosure (NR). ('B' : NC 86022075) Enclosure (NR). OS 6"map, (1962)

Two hut circles discovered during field investigation on slope above Halliagarry Burn.
'A' is the more substantial of the two and is scooped into the hillside on NE and is well built up on the SW. It measures 8.7m in diameter internally and consist of an earth and stone bank now spread to a breadth of 6m on the SW and is 0.5m high internally. Several large facing stones protruding from the bank give it a true width of 3m. The entrance, in the SE is 1m wide and 5m long. The vague outline of a small chamber, possibly a souterrain, is visible in the bank on the SW side of the entrance passage. A small annexe, formed by an earth and stone bank, abuts the east side of the entrance. It measures 6.5m by 5m and has its own small entrance at the SE end. There is a considerable amount of stone lying inside and around the main circle.
'B' is formed by a heather-covered bank 5.5m broad and 0.5m high and measures about 12m diameter internally. The entrance in SE is 0.8m wide with a portal stone on each side. The hut is scooped into the slope on the NE side.

These huts are as described by F1. Hut 'A' closely resembles hut V at Kilphedir. The 'small chamber' at the side of the entrance is far too indistinct to be identified with certainty as a souterrain. One or two clearance heaps are the only trace of contemporary cultivation in the area.
