Full Description

A hut circle at Dundonnell.

212724 885422 DC002 Dundonnel 8 Croftown track: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, D Curtis and C Dagg in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This is one of a group of circular stone structures at a high elevation on the slopes of Meall an Dubhe and situated near to the 'Croftown track' leading from near to Dundonnell House, over steep terrain to Achlunachan and Clachan. The elevation of DC002 is 257m. It is in fair condition, is 10m from a stream and is 800m from the Dundonnell River which flows along the base of the steeply sloping sides of the valley below. The sealoch Little Loch Broom is 6km downstream. The river is wide and may have been partly navigable. From the site there are panoramic views inland. Surrounding vegetation is heather and grass in equal proportions. Inside the structure vegetation consists of bracken and heather with some grass and moss. The circular platform is dug into and built out from a moderate S facing slope. To the north the ring bank has slumped, but is shallowly revetted into the slope. The walling has been much robbed but indications are that it is double skinned. Approximate average inner diameter is 10.1m. No other measurements were possible. A dyke tangential to the west wall face runs 20m in a NW direction to a shieling where there is a possibility of a later enclosure. The Croftown track runs in an E/W direction, 10m to the south of DC002. DC002 is at a distance of 350m from DC003 (see MHG59847) and 200m from DC001 (see MHG59900). <1> <2>
