Full Description
A hut circle at Dundonnell.
212283 885503 GNS001 Dundonnel 6: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, G Nursaw Smith in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This is one of a group of circular stone structures at a high elevation on the slopes of Meall an Dubhe and situated near to the 'Croftown track' leading from near to Dundonnell House, over steep terrain to Achlunachan and Clachan. Only the platform is visible. The elevation of GSN001 is 209m. It is in poor condition, is 200m from a stream and is 1000m from the Dundonnell River which flows along the base of the steeply sloping sides of the valley below. The sea loch Little Loch Broom is 6km downstream. The river is wide and may have been partly navigable. From the site there are panoramic views inland. Vegetation both surrounding and inside the structure is mostly bracken and grass with some heather. The circular platform is about 100m from the track and is sited just below a modern fence. It has slumped downslope and there is a lot of tumble both around and inside the structure. Dimensions are approximate and wall thickness or construction could not be measured. The inner diameter averages 8.5m. A possible entrance faces NW with passage width externally 1.0m, internally 1.5m, and passage length 2.3m. GNS001 is at a distance 20m upslope from DC003 (see MHG59847) and 300m from CB100 (see MHG59839). The cluster of HCs around CB100 is just over the hill to NW and is not in the line of sight of GNS100. <1> <2>
