Full Description

A hut circle on Ullapool Hill.

213888 893932 AW901 Ullapool Hill 1: The hut circle was visited by A Welti in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. AW901 is one of a cluster of 3 circular stone structures sited on the south west facing natural terracing of the slopes of Ullapool Hill, with panoramic views over the sea. Dun Loggie on the opposite shore of the loch is visible, as is Dun Rhiroy. The area has signs of later cultivation and crofting, with old field walls, clearance cairns, ruined sheilings and bracken. Vegetation surrounding the HC is a mixture of bracken grass and heather. Inside the structure the vegetation consists of grass and bracken. The HC is 30m from a stream and 300m from the sea loch, Loch Broom. AW901 is revetted into a steep slope to the north and the HC platform is built up from the surrounding ground. The site is well sheltered from the north. A ruined shieling with dimensions 5m x 2.5m abutts the HC on the NW outer wall. This later building is associated with a lot of tumble both inside and around it; there is also tumble inside the HC. The circular double skinned wall is made up of quite large well embedded boulders. Average inner diameter of the structure is 5.25m, outer diameter is 8.15m. The wall is 1m thick with maximum height 0.5m. The probable entrance faces west. The entrance passage is 1m wide both at the interior and the exterior, and passage length is 1m. AW901 is 100m from AW902 (see MHG59904) and 60m from AW903 (see MHG59906). <1> <2>
