Full Description

A hut circle at Inverlael, Lochbroom.

218813 886562 SM013 Inverlael Allt a Moullin 3: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, P Newling and S MacKenzie in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This HC is one of a group of 3 circular stone structures sited on breaks of a steep slope beside Allt a Moulin and above Lael Forest tree plantation. SM013 is in poor condition and has been much robbed out, probably to construct a shieling hut in the interior, dimensions 6m x 4m. SM013 is 50m from the Allt a Moulin and 1000m from the river Lael. It is 400m from a freshwater lochan and 1000m from Loch Broom, a sea loch. The vegetation surrounding the structure is a mixture of heather, bracken and grass. The interior vegetation is mainly grass and bracken with some heather. The platform of SM013 is on a natural terrace and is dug into and built out from the steep slope. To the S the platform embankment is substantially built up. The E arc has slumped into the hillside from its initial revettment. The outer diameter averages 12.5m. No wall structure or entrance could be discerned and maximum wall height was 0.2m. SM013 is at a distance of 60m from SM011 (see MHG) and 47m from SM012 (see MHG). <1> <2>
