Full Description

A hut circle at Srathain, Lochbroom.

213276 897628 BD001 Lochan Sgeireach BD001: The site was visited by A Welti and B Dumughn in 2016 as part of research on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was originally part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. BD001 presents as a circular heather covered mounded platform, on top of which is a ruined shieling. It lies on a moderate south facing slope beside a small burn which flows south from Lochan Sgeireach. It is 500m from both a track leading NE to the Dam Lochs (all freshwater), and from the Allt an Srathain which is flowing E/W towards Loch Broom, a sea loch. The HC is 300m from fresh water Lochan Sgeireach. The surrounding terrain is heather moorland. Few measurements were possible. The mound has average diameter 10m and the shieling measures 5m x 3.5m. This structure is at a distance of 600m from the HC cluster around EI001. <1> <2>
