Full Description

A hut circle at Glen Arigolach.

198121 890303 JAN026 Glen Arigolach: The site was visited by A MacInnes and J Buchanan in 2014 as part of research for a dissertation by A Welti on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This oval stone structure sits on the moderate south facing slopes of Carn Leum Niall. JAN 026 is adjacent to an enclosure and there are further field boundaries of turf ansd stone in the vicinity. The surrounding landscape is covered mainly with grass and some heather. Inside the structure there are equal amounts of grass and heather. Views from the site are panoramic, inland. The HC is 20m from a stream and 1000m from both the Gruinard River to the West and fresh water Lochan na Cairill to the North. The platform is dug into and built out from the slope. The oval setting of facing stones is backed by a turf bank. Abutting the southern external entrance boulder there appears to be another banked line of stones curving in a circular arc encompassing the southern HC arc and enclosing a level platform. There is no entrance to this platform from the HC. Inner diameter of the oval HC N/S is 4.7m, E/W is 6.7m. Outer diameters are 7.4m N/S and 0.5m/E/W. The double skinned wall is 1.2m thick with maximum height 0.5m. A definite entrance faces east with external width 1m, internal width 0.75m, and passage length 2.2m indicating extended terminals. <1> <2>
