Full Description

A hut circle near Gairloch.

180099 877692 JAN033 Glebe 1: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2014 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in fair condition with wall facings and ring bank visible. It is sited adjacent to an enclosure and in the vicinity are many clearance cairns and field boundaries. Surrounding and interior vegetation is a mixture of heather bracken and grass. The HC is 20m from a stream to the west, 300m from a river to the south, 700m from a fresh water loch to the east and 500m from a sea loch to the west. The site has panoramic views over the sea. The plafform sits on a natural terrace and is dug into and built out from a moderate SW facing slope. The average inner diameter is 6m, outer diameter is 10.35m. The double skinned wall is 2m thick with maximum height 1.2m. There is a possible entrance facing east, but a second entrance exists facing west. It may be that walls were altered to form a later enclosure. It is also possible that the original HC is overlain by a later structure. JAN033 is 5m from JAN034 (see MHG60323) and 100m from JAN035 (see MHG60325). <1> <2>
