Full Description

A hut circle to the north of the Slaggan Track, Rubha ban.

186504 894141 AEMC004 Slaggan Track 2: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, J Buchanan and A MacInnes in 2011 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in poor condition. It sits close to close to and above AEMC003 (see MHG60418) and the Slaggan track. It is one of a group of two pairs of hut circles clustered around the track all with panoramic views inland. The HC is within an enclosure and there are field boundaries in the vicinity. A stone dyke runs in an E/W direction very close to the north of the HC. The surrounding landscape is almost entirely covered with heather. Inside the structure there is mainly grass cover. AEMC004 is at a distance of 30m from a stream and 500m from fresh water Loch an Fheoir. The platform is built out from a moderate south facing slope. A substatial shieling has been built inside the structure and has robbed it of most of its stone. The inner diameter of the HC is 6.35m, outer diameter is 8.7m. The double skinned wall is 1.1m thick with maximum height 0.3m. No entrance could be discerned due to stone robbing. A nearby very unclear hut circle site at NG86346 94129 has been truncated by the track and only a few stones indicate its possible presence (see photo and MHG60426). AEMC004 is at a distance of 30m from AEMC003 and 100m from both AEMC005 (see MHG60423) and AEMC006 (see MHG60424). <1> <2>
