Full Description

A hut circle below the Slaggan Track, Rubha ban.

186389 894123 AEMC005 Slaggan Track 3: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, J Buchanan and A MacInnes in 2011 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in poor condition. It sits below the Slaggan track and close to AEMC006 (see MHG). The northern section of the wall has been truncated by the track. It is one of a group of two pairs of hut circles clustered around the track all with panoramic views inland. The HC is within an enclosure and there are field boundaries in the vicinity. The surrounding landscape is almost entirely covered with heather with some grass. Inside the HC cover is mainly bracken with a small amount of grass. The structure and the track both lie on a surface levelled into a moderate south facing slope (see sketch cross section) and the HC platform is dug into and built out from this slope. The site is 20m from a stream and 500m from fresh water Loch an Fheoir. The E/W diameter is 6.3m and the outer E/W diameter is 8.8m. The double skinned wall is 1.1m thick with maximum height 0.5m. No entrance could be discerned. The southern external wall, built up from the slope, is substantial and contains massive stones. AEMC005 is at a distance of 20m from AEMC006 and is 100m from AEMC004 (see MHG60420) and AEMC003 (see MHG60418). <1> <2>
