Full Description

A hut circle at Dubh Chlais.

211785 923139 GS024 Dubh Chlais 3: The hut circle was visited by G Sleight in 2013 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in fair condition although submerged by bracken, and lies on a moderate SE facing slope in a rough landscape surrounded by low rocky hills. The ring bank and the platform are visible. The surrounding landscape vegetation is mainly bracken with some grass and heather. Inside the structure vegetation is almost total bracken. The site is 75m from a stream, 500m from the River Inver, 1500m from fresh water Loch Bad na Goibhre and 2000m from the sealoch, Loch Inver. Views from the site are panoramic, inland. The platform is dug into and built out from the slope. A ditch 1m wide and 0.4m deep runs round about 15% of the platform. The average inner diameter is 8.75m, outer diameter is 12.4m. The double skinned wall is 2m thick with maximum height 0.8m. A probable entrance faces SW. GS024, together with GS023 (see MHG19450) and GS025 (see MHG60593), are all on SE facing slopes, across a burn from GS022 (see MHG19449), and relatively close to each other. GS022 is relatively isolated on a ridge to the SW of the other three. GS024 is at a distance of 90m from GS023, 20m from GS025 and 300m from GS022. <1> <2>
