Full Description
Large hut Circle or Atlantic roundhouse at Cnoc nan Each.
210973 921215 Cnoc nan Each 2 MH001: The hut circle was visited by A welti, G Sleight, M Haggith and others in 2013 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in fair condition. The platform is dug into and built out from a steep East facing slope. The terrain is sloping, hilly and rocky. There are ancient semi-natural woodlands of birch hazel and willow to N and E. Arcing around the HC to N, E, and S, are the remains of a substantial dyke at base of steep slopes. This may have been a contemporary enclosure around the HC. The monumental proportions of the structure and the enclosure wall might suggest an Atlantic roundhouse. Vegetation in the immediate surrounding area, as well as inside the structure, is mainly bracken with some grass and moss. The HC is 300m from astream which borders the woodland to the SE, 400m from freshwater loch , Loch Druim Suardalain, and 2500m from the sea at Lochinver. Views from the site are panoramic inland. The ring bank of the HC is visible as are some facing stones and some internal rubble. The average inner diameter of MH001 is 12.8m, outer diameter is 16.45m. The double skinned wall thickness is 2.0m with maximum height 1.5m. A possible entrance faces east. It appears to have been widened from its original state. MH001 is at a distance of 600m from GS070 (see MHG19447). <1> <2>
