Full Description
G Ross’s grandfather Donald was treasurer of the Free Kirk for over 40 years, and then his cousin Donald for 40 years after that. G Ross heard from his father that the outdoor services were held across the road from the church, and that up to 900 people come to hear Gustavus Aird preach. M Chalmers remembers the preaching site looking down on to the old Free Church Manse. Gustavus Aird is known to have held large communion gatherings outdoors in the 1880s, and perhaps this photograph relates to one of these (information from M Ross, citing Life of Gustavus Aird by Alexander Macrae). A picture of an outdoor preaching service, said to be from the 1880s, is in Christopher Uncles’ book 'Memories of East Sutherland' (p. 32). <1>
