Full Description
A Hut circle at Kilvaxter.
138997 869622 Kilvaxter JAN062: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes, B Blackburn and M Wildgoose in 2018 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure lies in grassland about 1000m N of JAN060 (see MHG61062) and JAN061 (see MHG61063) with a similar surrounding landscape of gently sloping grazed farm land. A well preserved souterrain lies 10m to SE of the HC. These two structures may be associated. The site is 1000m northeast of a drained lochan in a flat marshy area, and 3000m from the sea. A stream runs nearby. JAN062 lies on a gentle east facing slope. The interior is bowl shaped with vegetation of grass and nettles. The platform is well dug into the slope and facing stones are visible in the revetted wall in the western arc. Measurements were difficult as the HC walls are cut into the bank and a later stone wall runs E/W abutting cutting the S side of the structure. An inner diameter of 6.8m was measured in an E/W direction. The HC walls are double skinned with thickness 1.7m and maximum height of 0.75m at the revetted section. A possible entrance could be facing SE towards the souterrain entrance but there is no firm evidence for this. West of the HC are several dips in the ground which may indicate later use of the land. <1> <2>
