A hut circle at Uig.

139883 862876 Uig S 7 JAN067: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes, B Blackburn and M Wildgoose in 2018 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. A cluster of 14 roundhouses are scattered over a 1000m x 500m area of grazed grassland at South Cuil, on slopes varying from gentle to steep, and all facing west over Uig Bay. Numerous field walls and enclosures, many of which appear ancient, indicate long term usage of this grazing land. A farm track runs NE/SW below most of the HC cluster and along the fairly level base of the sloping ground. A standing stone (MHG5772) which could indicate ritual activities, is at a distance of 470m from JAN067. This circular stone structure is in fair condition and the ring bank is visible as are some inner facing stones. It is sited on a platform built out from a moderate west facing slope and. The surrounding landscape as well as the interior vegetation is grassland. The site is 10m from a stream, 800m from the sea and has panoramic views to land and sea. The internal diameter averages 7.35m, external diameter is 10.75m. The double skinned wall is 1.7m thick with maximum height 0.25m. The probable entrance faces SW, its width is 1.7m and passage length is 1.8m. The HC lies 6m to the E of a track. JAN067 is at a distance of 150m from BB107 (see MHG). <1> <2>
