Full Description

A hut circle at Uig.

139797 862731 Uig S 9 BB707: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes, B Blackburn and M Wildgoose in 2018 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. A cluster of 14 circular stone structures are scattered over a 1000m x 500m area of grazed drassland at South Cuil, on slopes varying from gentle to steep, and all facing west over Uig Bay. Numerous field walls and enclosures, many of which appear ancient, indicate long term usage of this grazing land. A farm track runs NE/SW below most of the HC cluster and along the fairly level base of the sloping ground. A standing stone (MHG5772) which could indicate ritual activities, is at a distance of 370m from BB707. The circular stone structure is 100m from a stream and 1000m from the sea at Uig Bay. The surrounding landscape cover is a mixture of heather and grass, the interior of the structure being mostly grass covered. From the site there are panoramic views over land and sea. The structure is in fair condition. The platform is dug into a fairly steep NW facing slope. Some wall facings and the ring bank are visible. Average inner diameter of the HC is 6.65m, outer diameter is 10.8m. The thickness of the double skinned wall is 2.4m, with maximum height 0.5m. In the eastern arc there is a large facing stone in the outer wall. A definite entrance faces NW and appears to lead into BB707A. There is a fallen orthostat in front of the inside of the entrance passage. This passage is 2.4m in length and both its internal and external widths are 1.3m. BB707 is 25m from JAN068 (see MHG61341) and 2m from BB707A (see MHG). <1> <2>
