Full Description

A township comprising three unroofed buildings, an enclosure, a field and a length of field wall is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet lxxxvii). Three unroofed buildings, an enclosure of four compartments, another enclosure and two fields are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1994).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 17 July 1996

A survey of the area around Achadh A'Chatha (west) was undertaken by members of the North of Scotland Archaeological Society (NoSAS) in 2002. The settlement is situated at a height of 340m on glacial terraces of relatively fertile and well-drained land. To the north and west of the settlement there are large areas of improved ground, elevated and bisected by deepcut meltwater channels. There are two groups of buildings, each situated on its own terrace. The lower settlement (not on 1st edition OS) is situated on a grassy terrace with some outcrops of heather. It has 7 buildings and 1 enclosure and the buildings appear to have been robbed of smaller stones, many of the remaining stones being quite sizeable.

Site 40. On a NE/SW axis, this building is situated on a raised "spur" and slopes gently to the east. Overall length is 18m. Comprised of three compartments, the east and middle are more intact than the west. Remnants of the walls of the eastmost two compartments contain some sizeable stones (0.5m), they are generally 0.6 - 0.7m in width and 0.2 - 0.3m in height. Middle compartment is 4m x 2.5 internally, possible door in south wall, some tumble internally. The east compartment measures 7m x 2.5m internally and the west compartment is 4m x 2.5m - the walls are very low and there are only few stones. <1>
