Full Description

A sheepfold and enclosure at Achaeter.

A sheepfold and enclosure were identified in LiDAR data gathered by AOC Archaeology in 2011 as part of the mitigation for the visual impact on the archaeological landscape associated with the proposed Baillie Hill windfarm, Caithness. Modern rectilinear sheep fank, overlying an earlier square enclosure 30m by 27m, located just to the N. <1>

The sheepfold is shown on the OS 1st Edition 6" map, so is probably at least mid-C19 in date. An area of rig cultivation can also be seen immediately adjacent to the east-southeast in the LiDAR data. It is possible that this site was created out of an earlier farmstead.
