Full Description

A large hut circle or homestead at Claonel near Lairg, Sutherland.

The feature is visible on oblique aerial photographs taken by the late JS Bone and appears as a flat-topped conical mound with a bank or wall on the top of it and was noticed by G Sleight whilst cataloguing photos from the JS Bone collection. There are indications in the photographs that it may be sited within a larger enclosure which extends into the adjacent forestry plantation. <1>

A site visit was carried out by G Sleight of NoSAS on 21/11/2020.

GIS data created in 2020 according to location of site as seen on 2009 vertical APs. At its widest the hut circle measures c.14m in diameter. <2>
