Full Description

In July 2015, a walkover survey was undertaken at Raemore Wood, Lairg by Anne Coombs on behalf of the Forestry Commission Scotland to identify and demarcate archaeological sites in advance of pre-stocking operations.

Site 8; A bloomery in the form of a dense scatter of iron slag, c.15m in diameter, was lying on top of the upturned soil of the planting mounds on the north edge of the new conifer plantation. The site may not have been visible in any way prior to the mounding apart from a very slight green mound. <1>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location approximate. (T. Blackie 25/08/21)
