Full Description

Between May and August 2012, a survey was undertaken by the North of Scotland Archaeological Society (NoSAS) to identify, survey, and record the archaeological remains at Achadh Mor, Loch Garve.

Site 22; Cup marked stone. Located just 20m to the SW of a burnt mound (site 37 NOSAS survey). A perched mica schist boulder 2m x 1.1m x 0.9m tall has 7 cups on its upper surface. Two of the cups are well defined and c100mm diameter, one being 30mm deep and the other c15mm deep; both show the faintest remains of possible relief rings. The other 5 cups are smaller. <1>

This panel was recorded as part of the ScRAP (Scotland’s Rock Art project) by members of NoSAS in June 2020. The panel lies at an altitude of 196m in forestry in a small valley on a generally southeast facing hillside, just 20m to the southwest of a burnt mound. It is also close to and above a multiperiod settlement site, overlooking Loch Garve and what is now, and probably always has been, a major routeway between the east and west coasts of Scotland.

This roughly rectangular schist boulder measures 2.5 x 1m with a maximum height of 1m. Its upper surface is rough with ridges of bedding planes and garnet inclusions. There is a line of four cups on the upper surface. All are between 8 and 10 cms diameter, one is well defined and 2cms deep the others much more eroded and just 1cm deep. It is possible that there could be faint rings around two of the three eroded cups. <2>
