Full Description

Several circular stone-built structures were identified on land exposed by low water at the top west end of Glen Cannich by Glenn Wilks, a walker, on the 29th June 2021. Following notification to Historic Environment Scotland, four members of the North of Scotland Archaeological Society and Mr Wilks visited this area on 27th July 2021. Their aim was to survey these structures and to obtain material for carbon dating before the waters of the loch rose again.

The structures associated with Allt Nead;

Structure 1; Hut Circle. A circular stone-walled structure survives here measuring 14.2m N-S by 14.3m E-W and sits on a possibly natural mound of stones. The outer kerb is marked by rounded boulders about 0.4 - 0.6m in diameter, best defined on the north side. The boulders on the south arc are less obvious and may have been disturbed by later wave action. There is an inner kerb of flatter stones averaging 0.4 – 0.5m in length, though there are examples up to 0.8m long. At the north, this kerb is 3.3m from the outside edge of the outer kerb. The inner kerb forms a ring 12m wide but given the ill-defined edge of the kerb on the south side the true diameter is unclear. Within this inner ring is a layer of rounded cobble stones averaging 100mm in diameter. There is a possible central hearth defined by larger stones measuring 1.5m N-S by 1m E-W. Some flatter stones on the kerb in the SE arc may mark the site of an entrance. 1.8m to the east of this area on its northern edge is a line of stones 6.3m long, aligned ENE. <1>
