Full Description

Several circular stone-built structures were identified on land exposed by low water at the top west end of Glen Cannich by Glenn Wilks, a walker, on the 29th June 2021. Following notification to Historic Environment Scotland, four members of the North of Scotland Archaeological Society and Mr Wilks visited this area on 27th July 2021. Their aim was to survey these structures and to obtain material for carbon dating before the waters of the loch rose again.

The structures associated with Allt Nead;

Structure 6; Circular structure. This circular feature sits on a low mound of stones and measures externally 10.3m E-W by 10.1m N-S. The interior, 7.3m in diameter, is composed of densely packed flat paving, with stones up to 0.9m long maximum, and with a slightly domed shaped. There is a slight possibility of an entrance to the west where the flat paving extends outwards. The interior is partly filled with deschampsia and molinia grasses encroaching over the paving. Unlike the other four circular features, the stones on the outside do not form an obvious wall kerb. This structure may, perhaps, have been once a roundhouse or hut circle similar to the others, but in its present form is more akin to a hay-stack base than a roofed building. It may therefore relate to the more recent building, possibly a farmhouse, previously recorded at NH 10507 30249 (Highland Council HER: MHG 23013), or the settlement of Lungard further west at NH 10340 30029. <1>
