Full Description

A possible early post-medieval settlement in Glenmazeran.

The earthworks of at least one rectangular enclosure, several buildings and a length of dyke may represent a lost early post-medieval settlement to the southwest of Glenmazeran Lodge. The features are visible on vertical aerial photographs, particularly those dating to 2011, but are not shown on any historic maps. There is, however, a possibility that it may be the settlement of 'Innermarsan' (possibly should be 'Invermarsan') shown in roughly this location on the Roy Military maps. However, on Roy the settlement is shown on the south side of the Glenmazeran Burn which is a tributary of the River Findhorn rather than the north as is the case here. It is possible that both the burn and the river have changed course. The remains may be partly overlain to the north by several different phases of sheepfolds. <1>

Some of the buildings visible on aerial photographs have subsequently been destroyed without record by the construction of a hardstanding sometime between 2015 and 2020.
