Full Description

A hut circle at Lag na Saille, Achiltibuie.

205561 913201 Lag na Saille 6 DC201: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, C MacNeilage, D Curtis and others in 2013 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This structure is in poor condition. It is one of a group of 5 circular stone structures lying on terraces along the banks of a steepsided valley above a fast flowing burn. The burn emerges into a sheltered bay at Lag na Saille. There are many signs of later cultivation in the form of lazy beds, later enclosure walls and vegetation change. The landscape is sloping, hilly and rocky. Views from the site are panoramic over land and sea. CMM603 (see MHG) is visible from the site which is just over the hill from JF010 (see MHG) and CMM604 (see MHG). Surrounding vegetation is a mixture of heather, bracken and grass. Inside the structure is a large proportion of moss, with bracken and grass. DC201 is sited on a break of slope on a fairlly steep hillside. It is built out from the slope and faces W. The distance from a stream is 150m to S, and the site is 150m from the sea to W. The ring bank and some stones are visible. The double skinned wall is 1.3m thick with maximum height 0.4m. Average inner diameter is 4.65m, outer diameter is 7.5m. A possible entrance faces SE but is obscured by tumble. Internal entrance width seems to be 1.3m, with passage length 1.9m. A ruined shieling with outbuildings lies 50m to SE and to W there are uninvestigated mounds and a track leading to a gate. DC201 is at a distance of 450m from the clusters around JF010 and CMM603. <1> <2>
