Full Description

A hut circle at Camas an Lochain (Scoraig).

200101 897997 Camusainlochain 2 CD002: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C Dagg in 2019 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is one of a cluster of ruined structures on the NE slopes of Cnoc Sgoraig above improved land around Loch Camas an Lochan. It is in poor condition. The surrounding terrain cover is heather bracken and moss, as is the vegetation inside the structure. There are several small burns nearby, running down slope to Loch Camas an Lochan. CD002 sits on a natural knoll, part of a gentle slope. From the site are panoramic views to sea and inland. The platform is dug into this slope. Many stones are visible including a large one height 0.75m situated on the outer face 5m to SSW of the centre. The average inner diameter of CD002 is 7.2m, outer diameter is 10.75m.The wall is mostly double skin. The interior of the HC is slightly mounded in the middle. The probable E facing entrance is 2.5m wide, and may have been robbed. Just inside the entrance and abutting the inner wall is a small circular hut, probably a shieling. CD002 is at a distance of 60m SSE of CD006 (see MHG62591), and 20m from CD003 (see MHG62598). A broch and dun are situated between 1000 and 2000 m away. <1> <2>
