Full Description

A hut circle at Camas an Lochain (Scoraig).

200557 897741 Camusainlochain 4 CD004: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C Dagg in 2019 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in poor condition and is one of a cluster of ruined structures on the NE slopes of Cnoc Sgoraig at an elevation of 69m, above improved land around Loch Camas an Lochan. The view is predominantly seaward. There are several small burns nearby, running down slope to Loch Camas an Lochan. The sea is 600m away to the north and 1300m away to the east. The terrain is sloping. Surrounding vegetation is mainly heather. The interior cover is is a mixture of moss and bracken. The platform is on the edge of a natural terrace, one of several terraces breaking up the steep slope which drops down NE to the lochan. On the NE side the platform is banked up, and the SW/W segments are dug into the slope. There is a very slight interior incline (5 deg) to NE. Average interior diameter is 9.4m, exterior diameter is 15.0m. Wall width is approximately 3.0m including spread, with maximum height 0.25m. The probable entrance faces E with an external width of 2.5m. It has one extended terminal on the N side. The structure is 20 m from a stream and has access to the sea. The sea is 600m away from the HC to the north and 1300m away to the east. CD004 is below and 100m from CD005 (see MHG) and these two structures are both at a distance of 700m from CD006 (see MHG62591), CD003 (see MHG62597) and CD002 (see MHG62598).They are both 1000m from the sea with access at Feith an Fheoir. <1> <2>
