Full Description

A hut circle at Camas an Lochain (Scoraig).

200527 897647 Camusainlochain 5 CD005: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C Dagg in 2019 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in poor condition and is one of a cluster of ruined structures on the NE slopes of Cnoc Sgoraig above improved land around Loch Camas an Lochan. There are several small burns nearby, running down slope to Loch Camas an Lochan. Surrounding vegetation is a mixture of deer grass, heather and bog myrtle. Interior vegetation is the same. The walls are covered with heather and moss forming a low spreading ring bank with little visible stone. The platform is on the edge of a terrace with level ground to W and S. The hill rises to W and the site is 15m from a stream. The interior is relatively level. Average interior diameter is 7.0m, exterior diameter is 11.5m. Wall width is approximately 2m including spread, with maximum height 0.25m. The possible entrance is indistinct with width 1.2m. To W of the structure is a ditch. CD005 is 150m upslope and SSW of CD004 (see MHG62599). A broch and dun are situated between 1000 and 2000 m away. <1> <2>
