Full Description

A hut circle at Glascarnoch.

228826 874113 Glascarnoch 1 AW905: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and I Brandt in 2019 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The site of this circular stone structure lies beneath the usual water level of Loch Glascarnoch, a reservoir created in the mid 20th century. When the loch water level is low the site is exposed. The structure is built up on a slightly raised gravel bed where the river (Abhainn an Torrain Duibh) abraids into 2 sections as it flows eastwards into Loch Glascarnoch. The stones are very clean, with little lichen or moss build up, indicating that the structure may be washed by flooding and water currents. There is a possible extended terminal on W side of a possible SE facing entrance but much tumble confuses this interpretation. Several groups of ancient trunks in the vicinity indicate previous woodland. The HC is in good condition with the ring bank and wall facing stones visible. The interior is all grass. External surroundings are mainly water and gravel with some patches of grass. Average inner diameter is 11.15m, outer diameter is 14.4m. The double skinned wall is 2.0m thick with maximum height 0.6m. Inside the HC are remains of a shieling. The HC may have been related to farming by the inhabitants of the small township nearby which was also flooded when the reservoir was constructed. <1> <2>
