Full Description

Meryl Marshall of NOSAS conducted a walkover survey identifying 4 new cup marked stones in the vicinity of a previously identified site in March 2019.

West Comrie
1. Cup marked stone – 27 cups plus. <1>

This panel was recorded as part of the ScRAP (Scotland’s Rock Art project) by members of NoSAS in April 2019. This panel is situated on a south facing slope near the top of a hill which forms part of the lip of easier ground to the north. It lies in a young commercial plantation with areas of mature trees nearby (100 to 300m distant). The panel is at an altitude of 172m and has wide views over Strathconon above the junction of the Rivers Conon and Meig. The cup marked rocks of West Comrie 3 and 5 are roughly 20m to the west and West Comrie 1 is about 60m to the east.

This outcrop is a large slab of exposed bedrock almost flush with the ground and measuring 3.6 x 2m. It can be divided into two halves by its sloping surfaces. The west half slopes towards the south, and the east half, which is slightly steeper, slopes towards the southeast. The majority of the cups are very weather-worn and are on the west half of the rock. Some appear to form tight clusters and arrangements. There are 25 cups, 1 dumbell and 5 further possible cups. <2>

NGR adjusted based on 2021 vertical aerial photographs. <2>
