216495 894898 Loch Achall 5 Blar Caliscaig AW505: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C Boyd in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The area around Loch Achall shows evidence of multi period farming and is currently well grazed by sheep. This circular stone structure is very damaged and few stones are visible. It lies on a moderate north facing slope 200m from a stream and 500m from Loch Achall. From the site views are panoramic inland. The surrounding landscape vegetation is a mixture of heather and grass. Inside the structure bracken predominates, with some grass and heather. The platform is revetted into the slope The entrance faces east and slopes down from the structure. To the north of the HC platform there is a steep low cliff face, below which is a small terrace on which are the footings of a possible shieling. The HC has average wall diameter 6.5m. There is no clear evidence of double skin wall construction and no further measurements were possible. AW505 is distant 500m from AW502 (see MHG7482), 700m from AW504 (see MHG7537) and 1000m from AW501 (see MHG6329). These HCs may be associated. <2> <3>
