Full Description

A hut circle near Shieldaig.

Hut circle c5m diameter, moss covered stone walls, partly dug into rising ground. <1>

180822 873016 Shieldaig 4 AMC135: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular stone structure sits on a natural South facing terrace/shelf in sloping oak woodland. Average internal diameter is 7.5m, external diameter is 9m. Double skinned wall is 0.8m thick with maximum height 1m. The probable entrance faces east and has external width 1m, internal width 0.9m, with passage length 1.1m. This roundhouse may be linked to AMC136 (MHG8384), and possibly to the cluster around AMC129 (MHG8385), which may be in the sight line. Field boundary walls lie 20m to NW and an enclosure, probably later in date, lies 70m to NE. There is a rectangular structure abutting the S wall, well built with double skinned walling 0.6m thick. Further structures lie around 50 m downslope (S) from HC. <2> <3>
