Full Description
A hut circle at Druim Fada, probably now destroyed. Originally recorded by the OS as hut circle 'B'. For Hut circles 'A', 'C', and 'D' see MHG2768, MHG63500 and MHG63501.
Centred at NH 388 298 on a generally N-facing slope are four stone-walled huts (A-D) and a contemporary field system.
Hut diameters are given between wall centres.
NH 3892 2999 Hut 'A' measures about 12.0m from NW through the simple entrance in the SE by about 11.0m transversely, with the wall spread to about 3.0m all round.
NH 3912 2997 'B' is overgrown with scrub and measures about 10.0m in diameter with a wall spread to about 2.5m. The simple entrance is in the ESE. A clearance heap lies immediately outside the S arc not quite touching the wall.
NH 3904 2969 'C' is denuded and measures about 12.5m from WNW through the mutilated entrance in the ESE by about 10.0m transversely, with the wall spread to about 2.5m.
NH 3898 2964 'D' measures about 12.0m from SSW through the simple entrance in the NNE by about 11.0m transversely with the wall spread to about 2.5m all round. The E arc is mutilated.
The field system is defined by stone clearance heaps, occasional lynchets, and field walls, and is mainly overgrown with birch scrub and partly overlaid by depop. Cultivation. It is most clearly seen in the W where a field measures about 30.0m by about 20.0m
Hut circles surveyed at 1/2500 and field system delineated on 1/10 000 field sheet.
Visited by OS (A A) 27 June 1973
No change to previous field report.
Surveyed at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (J B) 16 February 1979
Hut circle B may well have been lost. Planning application IN/99/520 for a house plot in this area was given to us with an incorrect grid reference and therefore it appeared that no archaeology was affected. The application for detailed planning permission with the correct grid reference, alerted DL to the presence of archaeological remains. Site visited with J Falconer, planning officer, 9/12/99. The applicant has cleared the site and upgraded the access prior to having full planning permission. Consequently Hut Circle B appears to be missing.
