Full Description

The remains of a Farmstead named 'Croft', on the north side of the Allt Bruachaig. It is shown on the OS 1st Edition 6" map as a cluster of at least 7 buildings. By the 2nd Edition these had been reduced to 3 large buildings, one an inverted 'T' -shape, which probably included elements of the earlier buildings. <1> <2>

The ruins of the farmstead were visited and noted during a walkover survey by Headland Archaeology in 2004 in advance of the proposed Glenkirk Wind farm. Although it lay outwith the propsed turbine area it lay close to the access track. <3>

The site was visited and recorded during a walkover survey by Ross and Cromarty Archaeological Services in 2013 in advance of a proposed woodland creation scheme. The ruins of the abandoned farmstead on the northwest side of the survey area were rapidly surveyed and are shown in Figure 2. The layout of the site, depicted as still in use on Bartholomew’s 1934 map of Inverness-shire, appeared to be much the same as shown on the 1900 2nd Edition OS map. <4>
