Full Description
Remains of a mortared building in Achany Wood, Inveran. First noted by Forestry staff, it was visited during a survey in 1998 by Wordsworth Archaeological services in advance of a proposed woodland planting scheme. (NOTE: all site NGRS supplied in the report are incorrect and have been corrected using comparison between the plan supplied in the report, available aerial photography, historic OS mapping and SEPA/Scottish Gov LiDAR data)

A mortar-rendered building, measuring 9m by 4m, has already been recorded here as a site by the Forestry Authority. The remains of an additional structure also 9m long abut the west end of this building and there are traces of a possible yard extending 5m to the south. This was shown as roofed in 1903 with an enclosure to the north (not noted during the survey). Recommendation: The remains should be protected during felling and planting. A 20m zone of protection should include the possible building to the west and the yard to the south. If the enclosure to the north can be identified this should also be protected. <1>
A desk-based study and reconnaissance field survey were conducted by CFA in 2009-10 for the full extent of the proposed Braemore Wind Farm. Site 2: The Ordnance Survey 1st Edition map depicts a single roofed rectangular building a short distance north of Inveran. Field survey recorded the remains of a rectangular drystone built building with a small enclosure attached to its south western end. The building is divided into two rooms measuring 10m x 5m and 8m x 5m. The walls of the building are preserved to a height of 1.6m along its northern wall and 0.4m along its southern wall. The Forestry Commission records a site immediately to the north of the farmstead, but further details are not given. <2>
The site is visible on vertical aerial photography taken in 2020. <3>
